My Creative Space – Facing the Beast

Well, I did it. I unfolded all the pieces of The Fail Skirt, laid them all out on my friend’s floor and gave her helpless looks as I tried to piece it together. After some false starts, we established that it should fit me, that it’s not too short, and that it’s going to look really cool when it’s done.

Once I fit the zip, I think it’ll be much easier to get going. I went through the principle of how to make the box pleats, and it seems fairly logical, so as long as I get all the right pieces in the right order, it should be fine. One of the biggest problems was that my writing had faded from the pieces, and I hadn’t a clue what went where! Everything is now relabelled, I have a diagram and a much better idea of what I’m doing. I have this mad idea that I might get it done over the weekend, as well as hemming my practice skirt, but that might be a stitch too far.

In other news, I must share this with you as well. I sometimes take part in the Cheap as Chips swap on Ravelry, and my parcel arrived this morning. Along with amazing-smelling coffee and some gorgeous earrings which I’m currently wearing, I got a sock monkey! My very own sock monkey! It’s stripey and awesome, and loves the naff pattern book that my sender included. I adore 60s and 70s patterns – they’re not quite kitsch, but they’re cool to me. Even the sock monkey – whose name is Gerald – loves them:

  1. You have been very busy, sewing, crocheting, blogging…
I love Gerald, and he has such a good taste too! I love the 70s patterns, I borrowed one from my neighbour a few weeks ago and many of the patters were brilliant, a few of them should be kept in the past, like grown-up knitted trousers, but most of them were very wearable and wouldn’t shock me to see any of those pieces in the high street today.

Looking forward how you get on with the skirt πŸ˜‰

    1. Aw, thank you! I’ve tried to blog more this year so that I remember all the things I make. As you say, I’ve been busy, and if I don’t write it down, I forget about it πŸ™‚

Ooh, knitted trousers! That’s up there with a crocheted bikini. I’m sure they work for someone, but that person isn’t me. There are some awesome tea cosies that I really want to make in this one.

I’ll post on the skirt at the weekend. Hopefully it’ll look more like a skirt and less like a collection of random bits by then!

  2. Thanks for dropping by my Blog. It’s the first time I’ve joined a swap (I organised a swap last Christmas but due to personal circumstances I didn’t swap/swapee myself), I’m very excited – no pressure though. I love your skirt fabric, who needs Boden when you have a great pattern and fantastic fabric. I would give anything to be able to crochet (I can knit fine!), I think my fingers are too fat! LOL Take care. x

    1. I love that Cafe Mocha so much that I think I’m going to have to buy more, despite my stash diet! It’s just gorgeous.

I’ve done swaps on Ravelry, but this is my first blog one, so I’m really looking forward to it. Without giving anything away, I’m already chuffed with some of your parcel! Hope you have fun too πŸ˜€

  3. I am loving all the swap conversations I’m noticing around the place! So cool! Very good luck with your skirt… am looking forward to seeing how it pans out. And how jealous am I of your parcel? The sock monkey is cool, but the patterns look cooler – am squinting away and wondering if that cushion on the front (with the flowers) is knit or crochet…

    1. It’s been great making contact with people πŸ™‚

My parcel was incredibly awesome, and all my colleagues were jealous as well! I think the cushion is crocheted, or at least the flowers are, and the book is a really good mix of the two. Although inevitably the patterns I like best are knitted! Those could take me a while…

I hope to post about the skirt soon. It all got very interesting…
