A list too far

You know you’re in trouble when you contemplate writing a list of lists. My ‘to do’ lists are actually not too bad at the moment, it’s my ‘want to do’ lists that are a bit out of control.

I’m one of those people who likes to amass information then sift through it for what I want. Linear thinking is really not my strong point, nor is moderation. Unless I’ve absolutely swamped myself in everything I might possibly need, I find it difficult to choose one thing, but I also find it difficult to choose because I’ve got too much information. It’s a real ‘damned if you do…’ kind of thing.

Recently, my big thing has been stashing fabric, and I’m sure next month it will be stashing yarn, and probably something else the month after that. This is partly to do with the critical mass idea that I was talking about above, and partly because they’re things I can do from my desk at work! Until I can bring my sewing machine to the library, or crochet while I type, crafting is confined to my few precious free hours. I think I’m working my way up to a truly horrible decision, which isn’t going to be popular with my other half either, but it might have to be done.

Want to know what it is?

I’m going to have to get up earlier, and I’m going to have to cycle to work. At the moment, if I walk or get the bus, getting to work takes around 45-60 minutes. And I like to be in work early, so I’m leaving at some silly hour of the morning to sit at my desk and wish I was crafting. If I got up a little earlier, not only would I have time for a proper breakfast, but I’d get 30-60 minutes craft time in the mornings. That’s a lot of sewing time, especially if I leave things set up the night before.

I’m hoping my new schedule will run something like:
6am – up, stagger to shower, throw on clothes, attempt to eat breakfast without getting it on me or craft materials. Get bag ready to go to work. DRINK COFFEE (that one’s quite important)
7am – Craft hour! If I allow an hour, that lets me set up and clear down easily, as well as allowing for slippage on the days when I just can’t get up.
8am – leave for work. On a bike, this should take me about half an hour, which is more than enough time to catch my breath before the day starts.

I always used to get up at 6, and although it’ll be hard to adjust at first, I think I’ll get used to it pretty quickly, and spending an hour under my daylight bulb first thing in the morning will do me the world of good. It’ll take time to shift my day in this direction, and I’m not going to attempt anything complex like cutting at 7 in the morning (my lines are wonky enough as it is!) but I could get through a heck of a lot of bags in an extra hour a day.

Wish me luck! Hopefully by Christmas, my lists will look like they belong to a sane person again.

Has anyone else tried this? How did it work out for you? The thing I’m most worried about is how the other half will take to it, since he gets up after me in the morning. Any advice on marital diplomacy?!

  1. Your post made me smile. I have been planning to use early morning time on my days
off to fit in crafting as I get up really early on work days but have not quite managed it yet!!!

  2. Hmm, I too used to get up at/near 6am regularly, even as recently as a year or two ago. And I too am trying to get up at/near 6am again now, with little success so far, but that’s due in large part to the fact I stay up way too late.

As for martial diplomacy, not sure. But I figure if getting in an hour of crafting makes you feel better, then that will translates into payoffs in the marriage too, right?

My plan is to get to bed by 9:30pm tonight, especially since I’m feeling sleepy right now. So I better sign off.

P.S. I’m so glad you left a note over at my place today! And glad it was a timely post! : )

    1. I hear you about staying up too late. I’ve got too used to flicking on the TV and watching to the end of CSI/Top Gear/whatever Dave is showing and suddenly realising it’s 10pm, which means I’m 30 mins behind schedule :S Maybe I’ll switch to DVDs or the radio in the hopes that I can turn them off more easily.

I’m going to aim for 6.30 for every day next week, and hopefully gradually reset my body clock that way. Daylight bulbs are also a huge help, as they make it seem like a glorious sunrise every morning!

It’s funny how sometimes you read someone else’s post and it’s like they’re reading your mind! It’s something I’ve been trying to put into words for myself for a while now – reading your post has given me the spur to get on and finish mine đŸ™‚
